Speeding Up UniFi Browsing on the iOS

So you got yourself a UniFi subscription from Telekom Malaysia. Noticed a considerably appalling browsing speed on your iOS devices?

After a lot of digging around. I found out it isn't entirely the WiFi or the UniFi's fault. Its their DNS servers that are underperforming!

So how do we fix this. Simple - use Google's DNS. Here's how:

Go to Settings - Wifi

Tap that little blue arrow next to your UniFi's wifi connection.

Now it is very important that you do not attempt to edit any of the other fields. As you might end up losing your connection altogether!

The only field that we need to touch is the DNS field. Noticed how it is automatically set up to the router?

Tap the field, remove everything and enter the following:

8.8.8.8,8.8.4.4

Note: There is a comma in the middle.

Now, tap Back. The device will then reconnect to the wifi on it's own. Wait for it to complete.

Once this is done, try to browse and you'll notice that web pages loads significantly faster than before.

Good luck!

Sync Google Contacts to your iPhone, iPad and iPod Touch

I use my Google Contacts exclusively to store my contacts. As some of you might know, I use various mobile phones platforms. While syncing Google Contact to the Windows Phone is a piece of cake, making it sync over-the-air with an iOS device is not very straight-forward.

The good news is that, Google Contacts supports the cardDAV standards, which allows it to be synced into any apps or device that supports such protocol. The best news? iOS supports this protocol!

Enable Siri Location support for Non-US locations

So you got the new iPhone 4S, but only to be dismayed by the fact that Siri doesn't work in Malaysia when it comes to location-based information. Ok, now put down that spoon and stop banging on your desk. Take a look at this!

Yep, it works in Malaysia. All you need to do is to install the International Locations for Siri package. Well, uh, actually you have to buy them from Cydia store. It's only USD0.99 though. Don't know what Cydia is? Nevermind.

Note: To be able to install International Locations for Siri, you will need to have Cydia installed. To be able to install Cydia, you’ll need a jailbroken iPhone. You can search the web on how to do this. I will not be held responsible if the process of Jailbreaking somehow rewards you with an alumminosilicate glass paperweight.

Unfold: Tired of ‘Slide to Unlock’? Why not fold it instead?

While snooping around in Cydia, I found this neat little tweak you can install on your iPhone to have a refreshing new way to unlock the screen:

Pretty neat isn't it? This tweak is called Unfold, which you can get from the BigBoss repository in Cydia (it's included by default, so just search away!). The best part of this neat tweak? It is FREE
